The 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V has abdicated the throne, an instance that is a first in Malaysia, leaving the seat vacant, Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong will be acting King till the next ruler is decided by the Conference of Rulers.
In line with Article 32(3) of the Federal Constitution, a statement from the Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Wan Ahmad Dahlan Ab. Aziz said that the King has resigned.
“His Majesty has informed this matter officially to the Malay Rulers through a letter issued to the secretary of the Conference of Rulers,” said Wan Ahmad in the statement yesterday (6th January 2019)
The King who holds the record as the youngest to reign at the age of 47 when he was elected as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has offered his thanks to other Malay Rules who had chosen him as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong and expressed his highest appreciation to the Prime Minister and the federal government for their cooperation.
“As the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, His Majesty is very proud with the sacrifices and loyalty that has been shown to His Majesty and the country all this while,” said Wan Ahmad.
During the time Sultan Muhammad V was in office, he had made efforts to fulfill his responsibilities as Head of State and played his part as an anchor of stability, the source of justice and the basis of unity as well as a uniting factor among the rakyat.
The Conference of Rulers had convened today (7th January 2019) after the resignation of Sultan Muhammad V as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong believed to be to select a date for the Conference of Rulers to convene again to elect the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong. As the Kelantan ruler’s resignation is unprecedented, the Conference of Rulers are required to hold an unscheduled election within four weeks to decide the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Until then, Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzudin Shah, who is the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong shall be serving as acting king.
It was reported by NST that only six of nine Sultans were present at todays meeting, being Perlis ruler Tuanku Syed Sirajudin Syed Putra Jamalullail; Terengganu ruler Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin; Yang di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir; Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar; Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzudin Shah; and Sultan of Kedah Sultan Sallehuddin Shah.
