Pro-moderation group G25, was reported to have said that Islamist group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia’s (Isma) campaign for Malaysia to be declared an Islamic state would lead to Malaysia becoming a failed impoverished state.
G25 is a progressive group comprising of retired senior government officials committed to pursue a just, democratic, peaceful, tolerant, harmonious, moderate and progressive multi-racial, multi-cultural, multi religious Malaysia through Islamic principles of Wassatiyah (moderation) and Maqasid Syariah (well-being of the people) that affirm justice, compassion, mercy, equity.
“Our view in G25 is that what Isma is advocating will lead the country to become a failed state with poverty and misery for the masses.
“Isma should make it clear whether such a system of governing will make Malaysia a progressive country with a strong economy to raise standards of living and give confidence on the future of the country,” according to their statement.
The group also claims that the Sabah and Sarawak would reject such a far-right idealogy.
The campaign launched by Isma at the end of 2018, which employed the hand sign of the letter “C” to symbolise the crescent moon, which is one of Islam’s symbols, aims to gather one million signatures to supports its claims. The campaign named “Malaysia Negara Islam” (Malay for “Malaysia an Islamic State) is a five-month long campaign that will present the signatures to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
If Malaysia becomes an Islamic state, it will ultimately have an autocratic system where religion dictates the laws of the country, with religious teachers having the highest authority on any legislation which the Parliament or Cabinet wishes to introduce, according to G25. They also added that Islamic preachers can veto laws that they feel are not Islamic enough.
“Isma may well get the one million signatures but mainstream Malaysia, which represents the majority, will not subscribe to its Islamic agenda.
“Malaysians of all races know that the country has a better chance to develop into a united and successful nation under the democratic constitution that we have now than under a divisive constitution based on religion.
“Malaysia has done well under the constitution which the leaders of our independence, representing the three major races, created with the concurrence of the Malay Rulers, to be the foundation of our new nation,” G25 said.
