The anti-ICERD (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) rally on the 8th December 2018 will have more than 500,000 Umno members, according to an Umno leader.
Party supreme council member Datuk Md Alwi Che Ahmad said the rally will happen as scheduled in Kuala Lumpur next Saturday, despite objections from several parties.
“Let them express their objections and let them give conflicting opinions on the issue. We will continue with the rally as planned.
“This rally is not about haram or halal. It is about gathering to oppose the plan to ratify ICERD,” he was quoted by NSTP when he was contacted by them today
According to the NSTP report, Md Alwi Che or also known as Kok Lanas assemblyman said that he expects many people from Kelantan to attend the rally.
Despite several state muftis opposing the rally such as Negeri Sembilan mufti Datuk mohd Yusof Ahmad and Kelantan mufti Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad.
NSTP had also contacted Mohamad Shukri on the 29th November (2018), in which he had said that the rally would invite bad things as it is amidst a ‘heated’ situation now. He said there was a possibility that some quarters might create trouble during the assembly.
“Even in Islam, when we want to achieve something, we should consider the good and the bad. If there’s more bad than good, why would we continue?
“People might take advantage to spark riot in a rally like this. In my opinion, it’s better if this rally is not taking place,” he was quoted by NSTP.
Commenting further, he thoughts were in line with what Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had said a day before (28th November 2018) that they should show their gratitude over the decision to not ratify ICERD at the mosque.
