Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad had always been a big advocate of improving the education of Malaysian. He is especially skeptical about the English level amongst Malaysian.
He said: “The English language is important and must be practiced by high level civil servants”. Tun Dr. Mahathir has implied that is of paramount importance for the top civil servants to have a good command in the English language because they will need to meet important foreign figures in the future.
Tun Dr. Mahathir also plans to review co-curricular education from kindergarten to university level. He plans to employ non-governmental experts to assist in improving the education system in Malaysia.
Inspector General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun has also said he is to emulate the Prime Minister’s advocacy in the English language. He welcomes the Prime Minister’s directive and plans to organise intensive English courses, both written and for communication for police officers and other related staffs.
Mohamad Fuzi Harun has revealed that Tun Dr. Mahathir has instructed him to speak only in English and he is being assessed for his level of English.
The Inspector General launched the Professional Communication Special English Course at the Police DiRaja Malaysian College yesterday. He said that the fluency of the language will boost the image and level of professionalism of the task force in serving the community.
He revealed that currently only 30 senior officers attend the course. But in due time, when the facilities are ready, there will 14 police training centres nationwide. He also said that there are qualified English teachers in the force but may be open to employing external trainers for better education.
Briefings and meetings for Malaysian Police will also be conducted in English. But the Inspector General disprove the idea of recruiting new police only after they passed the English proficiency test. He said that it is out of his control because the Civil Service Department or Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA) handles this and it will need the government’s approval as well.
