Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir implied that the top level of the Malaysian government is corrupted and only few officials are trustworthy.
The Prime Minister told CNN: “From outside we saw the damage, but we never expected the damage to be so extensive. Most of the top echelons in the government are corrupt.”
He added: “I have to work with some of those people who are suspect, it’s a very difficult job, if you don’t work with people you trust, you don’t know whether what you want them to do will be done or not.”
The corruption points directly at Former Prime Minister Najib Razak. The Former Prime Minister’s corruption trial will determine after the 8th of August according to Attorney Generals Chambers.
Najib 65-years-old, is being charged with three counts of criminal offences in a case linked to embezzlement of government funds. The charges of criminal breach of trust fall under Section 409 of the Penal Code. It is said that Najib used 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) as a vehicle to siphon billions of Ringgits to his own account.
Convicted corruption offence carries a maximum 20 years in prison and a possible fine of five times the value of any bribe. He could also face several rounds of caning. However, Malaysian law dictates that men above the age of 50 are exempted from caning.
He pleaded not guilty to all offences and will surrender both his normal passport and diplomatic passport.
The case will be lead by newly appointed Attorney General Tommy Thomas with highly experienced lawyers recruited to assist the Attorney General. Tommy Thomas has accumulated 40 years experience as a corporate lawyer and is regarded to be the perfect candidate to lead the case. The current Prime Minister also said that the team has collected enough evidence to charge Najib and his wife, Rosmah Mansor.
